There is a moment just before something becomes itself — a flicker, a held breath, a threshold between states. That is where this collection was born.
Flicker State is Rhian's exploration of in-between-ness: the emotional space that exists between stillness and movement, between the body and the garment, between who we are and who we are becoming. It is a collection that asks to be worn slowly, and felt deeply.
The Prints
At the heart of Flicker State are its prints — each one developed in our Ōtepoti Dunedin studio as an extension of the collection's emotional language. Rather than surface decoration, the prints are conceived as a second skin: marks that carry meaning, that shift with light and movement, that feel as though they have always belonged to the cloth.
We work with natural fabrics — linen, silk, organic cotton — chosen for the way they hold colour and drape against the body. These are materials with memory. They soften with wear, they breathe, they age honestly. In a world of fast production and synthetic sameness, we believe the fabric itself is part of the story.
Made to Order
Every piece in Flicker State is made to order. This is not simply a production method — it is a philosophy.
When you place an order with Rhian, we begin. Your garment is cut and sewn in our Dunedin workshop, made for you specifically, in the size and form that suits your body. There is no warehouse of identical pieces waiting to be claimed. There is only the making.
This approach means less waste, more intention, and a garment that carries the quiet weight of having been made by hand, for a person. It is slow fashion in the truest sense - not as a trend, but as a commitment to a different way of making and consuming.
Made-to-order also means that each piece is, in some small way, singular. The same pattern, the same print, the same cloth - but yours.
